NEA endorses Baker

The National Education Association has endorsed Columbia’s state Rep. Judy Baker for the Ninth District seat in the U.S. House of representatives.

The association represents about 34,000 educators and school administrators in Missouri.

“Judy has a proven record educators can trust when it comes to the issues that matter most to them and their families – strong public schools, affordable and available health care and a commitment to keeping our families safe,” Chris Guinther, President of Missouri NEA, in a news release from Baker’s campaign. “Judy will be a voice in Congress that advocates for the change we need in Missouri and in America.”

Baker is running against Marion County Commissioner Lyndon Bode, former Public Service Commission chairman Steve Gaw and former state Sen. Ken Jacob in the Democratic primary to replace Republican Kenny Hulshof.

  1. Congratulations Representative Baker – we’re pulling for you.

  2. I understand that Judy Baker’s own company, CURA Advantage, has client organizations that are funded by the State of Missouri (such as the Missouri Kidney Foundation) or seek business from the government (such as the Daniel Correctional Psychiatric Services – DCPS). If Baker sits on the Missouri State Budget Committee, doesn’t that seem like a conflict of interest? If CURA helps these organizations get this government money, is that a violation of ethics? Something does not seem right….. I was reading some quotes on Judy Baker’s CURA website and it just caught my attention that people were thanking her company for helping them get the financial support, backing, funding, whatever, from the state. If she sits on the budget committee deciding who gets the state’s money, it just appears to me to be a conflict of interest. It almost seems like her company lobbying her committee. Is that legal?
