Unlike any other part of the Boone County Web site, assessor Tom Schauwecker’s site requires a free password to access certain information, including names and addresses of property owners.
The county recorder, Bettie Johnson, doesn’t require a password for similar information, and neither does Patricia Lensmeyer, the collector.

In an interview Friday, Schauwecker said he started to require the password a few years ago after his house got broken into. He wondered about the security of publishing people’s names and addresses.
You can enter a username and password, and someone in the assessor’s office approves it. Schauwecker said the office approves almost all of the applications.
Schauwecker doesn’t know whether he would be able to give data to authorities, but it’s just an added layer of security.
