Longer lease likely for Farmers Market

The City Council agreed to consider a longer lease for the Columbia Farmers’ Market at its meeting Monday night.

Sustainable Farms and Communities sent a letter to the council asking that it consider this option. It lobbied for a a 99-year lease to preserve its location on the parking lot of the Activity and Recreation Center, 1701 W. Ash St. As it stands, SF&C must renew its lease with the city every year.

SF&C pays $2,100 per year under the current lease.

Many council members spoke in favor of a longer lease and very highly of the market. To view the City Council report on the market, along with the letter from SF&C, click here.

  1. From the letter, it looks like city staff will draft a new agreement for the Farmer’s Market and the Council will vote it up or down, is that right? Does anybody know what else needs to happen to realize SF&C’s goal of a permanent market?
