City employees looking for a gym membership can get a discount, but not at the ARC

City employees looking to hit the weights or otherwise whip themselves into shape can get discounts at Wilson’s Fitness Centers or Key Largo Fitness and Tanning, but not at Columbia’s Activities and Recreation Center, owned and operated by the Parks and Recreation Department.

The curious disparity was brought up during discussion of adding a physical fitness requirement for the city’s police force (and accompanying comp time for weekly workouts) at last night’s pre-council meeting between City Council members, city executives and labor representatives from city employee organizations.

Even with the discounts provided by its competitors, the ARC still has one powerful defense: With an annual adult rate of $325, it’s still $35-50 cheaper than the discounted city employee rates provided by its competitors.
