City Council Wants Lower Speed Limits

About a year ago Columbia’s City Council sent a letter the Missouri Department of Transportation asking the department to lower the speed limit on U.S. 63 in Columbia.

At its meeting Monday night, the council addressed lowering the speed limit on U.S. 63 near the COLT Crossing. Before the meeting, Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman said he talked to MoDOT about lowering the speed limit on U.S. 63, but he doesn’t think the department is doing anything about it. Hindman said he was probably going ask the staff to approach MoDOT again about the speed limits.

MoDOT Senior Traffic Study Specialist Jason Sommerer said he has not seen any  correspondence from the council other than the letter. MoDOT has no plans to lower the speed limit.

Sommerer said MoDOT evaluated the speedlimit and found the 70 mph was supported. He said since U.S. 63 is a straighter highway and follows a new design standard, a driver can travel safely at 70 mph.
