Kraig Kahler, Columbia Water and Light Director, has resigned. He will be replaced in the interim by Michael J. Schmitz.

According to an official statement, City Manager Bill Watkins said he asked for Kahler’s resignation. “I have no doubts about Kraig’s professional integrity and intelligence,” Watkins said. “but he is experiencing some difficult family issues at the time. In my opinion it has affected his focus on the department in a way that is not likely to change in the near future.”

In March, Kahler was charged with third-degree domestic assault.

According to the statement, Schmitz has been with Columbia Water and Light since 2001 and has worked in the utility industry since 1968.
