Applications open for some boards and commissions

The City of Columbia has opened applications for some boards and commissions. See more below the jump.

Board of Mechanical Examiners

  • Vacancies: one
  • Term expires: June 17, 2011
  • Requirements: The member must be a general contractor not in the HVACR business and a resident of the city of Columbia.
  • Duties: The board gives examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Building Construction Codes Commission

  • Vacancies: two, for alternate members (to serve in the absence of the regular member)
  • Terms expire: Aug. 1, 2010
  • Requirements: 1. A professional engineer with experience in electrical/mechanical engineering. 2. A master plumber.
  • Duties: The commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Columbia Vision Commission

  • Vacancies: one
  • Term expires: Dec. 15, 2012
  • Requirements: The member must be a resident of Boone County, not residing within the city limits of Columbia, and must have demonstrated a commitment to the visioning process. Candidates will be evaluated on the ability to work with data and understand systematic relationships, the ability to work collaboratively, management skills, independence, existing memberships or positions and contributions to the diversity of the commission.
  • Duties: The commission tracks, monitors and assists with the implementation of the visioning process. Meetings are held on call.

Community Development Commission

  • Vacancies: two
  • Term expires: Nov. 1, 2011 and Nov. 1, 2012
  • Requirements: One must be a resident of the Fifth Ward (2011 expiration), and one must be a resident of the Fourth Ward (2012 expiration). All must be qualified voters of the city of Columbia. Members shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the commission.
  • Duties: The commission acts in an advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to community development. Monthly meetings are held on call.

Comprehensive Plan Task Force

  • Vacancies: 15
  • Requirements: Consideration will be given to prior involvement in the visioning process, service on a city commission, professional credentials or participation in a civic, business or professional organization. At least one member shall be a member of the Columbia Vision Commission.
  • Duties: The task force advises and assists the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council on all phases of the comprehensive plan development, including citizen involvement, public education and outreach, recruitment of volunteers and review of interim products. Meetings are held on call.

Cultural Affairs Commission

  • Vacancies: two
  • Terms expire: Oct. 31, 2012
  • Requirements: One must be involved in elementary or secondary education, and one must have significant knowledge and demonstrated interest in one or more areas of the arts, including music, dance, literature, visual arts, theater, folk arts, media arts, design and arts education. Members shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the commission.
  • Duties: The commission advises the Council in all matters pertaining to the arts and cultural environment of the city. Monthly meetings are held the second Monday at 4:15 p.m.

Mayor’s Committee on Physical Fitness

  • Vacancies: eight
  • Terms expire: Nov. 30, 2012
  • Requirements: Appointed by mayor
  • Duties: The committee educates the public about the importance of regular physical fitness activity and promotes, initiates and encourages local physical fitness and sports programs in the community. Monthly meetings are held as needed; quarterly meetings are held the first Tuesday of the designated month at 12:30 p.m.

Public Communications Resource Advisory Committee

  • Vacancies: one
  • Term expires: Dec. 31, 2010
  • Requirements: The member must be a qualified voter and resident of the First Ward, shall be experienced in the field of communications, citizenship or management of not-for-profit organizations, and shall not be a paid officer or employee of the city, nor serve on the board of directors or be employed by any entity that applies for funding through the committee or which receives funding upon recommendation of the committee.
  • Duties: The committee advises the City Council in allocating designated revenue to entities that provide public communication services to Columbia citizens. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Thursday at 4 p.m.
