City Web site offers neighborhood safety resources

I went to the Third Ward Safety Summit at Blue Ridge Elementary School and learned about some important resources available to Columbians to keep their neighborhoods safe.

Did you know: You can report all non-emergency cases to (573) 442-6131. This includes everything from suspicious activities (strangers in the area, for example) to an intersection near your neighborhood that you feel is unsafe. Any report that does not need immediate attention can be reported here.

It’s a good idea to get to know the beat officers in your neighborhood. If you are familiar with them, it’s easier to go to them, your kids will trust them and it will improve the relationship between your community and its officers. Go here and click the PDF file labeled “New beat and sector map.”

Did you know: Two active Neighborhood Watch members informed me that they found a way to employ off-duty police to their neighborhood to help increase security and decrease crime. If you’re interested in this option, talk to the Neighborhood Association in your area to explore your options.

If you have concerns in your neighborhood, but you’re not sure if you should call the police, contact the Office of Neighborhood Services.

Here’s a list of a few of the services they offer.

  • Report a street light issue
  • Code enforcement (report a problem)
  • Rental housing compliance
  • Having a safe party
  • Infill workshops
  • Reporting crime
  • Registered offenders list
  • U.S. Dept of Housing and Urban Development
  • Neighborhood Congress

The City Web site is still undergoing some updates, so check back often for more updates.
