Supporters of biotechnology (aka genetic engineering) told a roomful of MU journalism students about the technology’s benefits on Friday.

There was a surprise visitor: retiring U.S. Sen. Kit Bond.

Bond said he came to hear his friend Roger Beachy, director of the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, speak at the seminar, which organizers had named, “Biotech University.”

The Republican senator — like all the speakers on Friday — said that he supported genetic engineering for crops.

“The Luddites unfortunately control too much of public opinion,” he said.

Bond said he didn’t have time to watch Thursday’s heated debate between Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan and U.S. Congressman Roy Blunt over his Senate seat.
