The Circle of (Public) Life

We need your help.

You, the reader, the audience, the citizens of this great community we live in.

We, the journalists, the facilitators of information, are just that. A medium. A medium between you, the public, and those who represent you in this 200+ year experiment known as American democracy.

And now it is time we journalists refocus our efforts.

On you.

There are times, as journalists, when we  fail to remember one of the basic principles of our industry. It is not our job, in its entirety, to reiterate everything a public official says, to write exclusively about their campaigns in our coverage or uncover devious scandals in government. Those are aspects of our responsibilities, yes, but they by no means comprise the majority of our duties.

Our true responsibility is to the public. To you, the factory workers, grocers, engineers, lawyers, taxi drivers. To the people who make this community what it is.

So in an effort to increase our bottom-up reporting, we need your help. We want to know what you’re thinking, we value your opinions. We want to know what YOU want.

Because in the end, beneath all the political rhetoric, behind all the campaign slogans and candidate forums, this is not about politics. This is not about us.

It’s about you.

And then, maybe, we can all sing hakuna matata.
