City council approves banning alcohol in three Columbia parks

Prohibition has hit three of Columbia’s downtown parks.

The City Council unanimously approved Monday an ordinance that will prohibit drinking alcohol in:

  • Paquin Park
  • Flat Branch Park
  • Village Square Park

The Columbia Housing Authority requested the change after a number of problems related to excessive drinking were reported in Paquin Park. Phil Steinhaus, CEO of the Columbia Housing Authority, said some residents were afraid to come to the park. “For many of our residents this is their backyard,” Steinhaus said.

Residents should ask for a permit if they would like to organize special events in parks.

The ordinance will take effect April 1.
