Applications for boards and commissions are available

The Columbia city clerk is admitting applications for board and commission. By noon on Friday, Oct.7 applications must be sent to the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 2nd floor.  Applications are available on the city website  and at the clerk’s office.

The following 12 are current boards and commissions openings (alphabetical order):

  • The board of Adjustment has one unfilled position with the term to expire Nov. 1, 2016. The applicant must be a member of the city of Columbia. A substitute member is needed to serve in the absence of a regular member. Meetings are held every month  on the second Tuesday at 7p.m.
  • The Board of Mechanical Examiners has two vacancies with terms to expire June 17, 2014. Both applicants must be residents of the City of Columbia. One of them has to be a Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVACR) journeyman mechanic and the other must be a general contractor not in the HVACR business. Monthly meeting are held the second Tuesday at 5p.m.
  • The Building Construction Codes Commission has five vacancies with terms to expire Aug. 1, 2012; Aug. 1, 2013 and Aug. 1, 2014. The Commission needs one alternate electrician from each of this categories: professional engineer (experience in electrical/mechanical), master plumber and fire expert. In addition one regular and one alternate electrician are also needed. The fourth Monday of every month meetings are held at 4:30 p.m.
  • The Citizens Police Review Board has three unfilled positions with term to expire Nov.1, 2014. Applicants must be residents of Columbia and be registered voters. They cannot be employed by the city, be an elected public office holders, be a candidate for elected public office or be a party to any pending litigation against the city. In addition applicants should have no criminal record. The members of this board should show the cultural and racial diversity of Columbia.  Meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month at 7p.m.
  • The Columbia Community Development Commission has three unfilled positions with terms to expire Nov.1, 2014. One member each is need from Ward 1, Ward 5 and Ward 6.  Applicants cannot be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which receives financial support upon recommendation of the commission. All must be registered voters and cannot serve on the board of directors.  Every month meetings are held on call.
  • The Columbia Vision Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire Dec. 15, 2013, for the coordinating committee. All applicants have to be residents of the Boone County, not residing within the city limits of Columbia. They have to demonstrate a commitment to the visioning process. Candidates will be judged on the capacity to work with data and understand systematic relationships, the aptitude to work collaboratively, management skills, independence, existing memberships or positions and contributions to the diversity of the commission. Every last Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m.  meetings will be held.
  • The Comprehensive Plan Task Force has one unfilled position. The task force advises and assists the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council on all phases of the comprehensive plan development, along with citizen engagement, public education and outreach, recruitment of volunteers and review of interim products. The second and fourth Wednesday of every month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  meetings are held.
  • The Cultural Affairs Commission has four vacancies with terms to expire Oct.31, 2014. Members cannot be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which receives financial support upon recommendation of the commission and cannot serve on the board of directors. One applicant has to be from a business or professional office in the Special Business District and the other one has to be a layperson with no specialize knowledge in the arts. Monthly meetings are held the second Monday at 4:15p.m.
  • The Environment and Energy Commission has one unfilled position with the term to expire June 1, 2013. The applicant has to be a qualified voter of the city of Columbia and should have knowledge in matters pertaining to the environment. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Tuesday at 7p.m.
  • The Historic Preservation Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire Sept. 1, 2013. The applicant must be interested in historical preservation and represent disciplines such as architecture, design, law, real state appraisal, construction/general contracting or be a layperson active in historic preservation. Monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday at 7p.m.
  • The Internet Citizens Advisory Group has one vacancy with the term to expire Oct. 15, 2014. The group advises to staff and Council on the effective utilization of the Internet. Meetings are held every other month on the fourth Tuesday 5p.m.
  • The Substance Abuse Advisory Commission has three unfilled positions with terms to expire Oct. 31, 2014. One vacancy must be filled with a student under age 25, another has to be a healthcare professional and all shall have demonstrated interest in and concern for substance and alcohol abuse programs in the community. Monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday at 12 p.m.
