Joel Walsh

Brief Biography: A 2005 graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Joel Walsh left a reporting job with a string of weekly newspapers northwest of Kansas City to pursue a master’s degree in journalism at MU. Joel has also covered local sports and community events on a freelance basis with publications in the Kansas City and St. Louis metropolitan areas, including work with The Kansas City Star. His research on the history of St. Louis’s two Negro Leagues baseball teams resulted in a feature article published in the Missouri Historical Society’s quarterly magazine, Gateway, in 2004.

Hometown: Overland Park, Kan.

My Career Goals: Although I’ve become resigned to the fact that I probably won’t be the managing editor of the New York Times, I’d like to one day work at a major daily newspaper or a popular news magazine. Know anybody I should talk to?

Why Journalism Interests Me: 1) I love to write, 2) I enjoy trying to communicate someone’s story to a wider audience and 3) I believe a better informed populace makes for a stronger democracy. While I may never become rich because of it, a job as a journalist is something I find personally fulfilling and something I would enjoy waking up to everyday. A responsible reporter can still earn the respect of readers and sources alike, and his or her voice will continue to be heard — even in today’s sound-byte society.

Other Interests: Live music, college sports, travel, eating and drinking well and good conversation with good friends.
