Jim Holt

Brief Biography:  I was born in St. Louis, MO and am currently a senior at MU. I’m enrolled in the School of Journalism with a print/digital news emphasis. I have a sociology minor and I think that gives me a little perspective on different demographics, and more specifically on the way communities function with journalism. I love the role of the watchdog and relish the fact that the journalism profession is the only one that is provided for in the First Amendment. I believe some of the best journalism comes across through the lives of normal people.

Hometown: St. Louis, MO

My Career Goals: With the economy the way it is, and with the decline in newspaper readership, the future for journalists looks scary. I want to work at a newspaper in a major metropolitan area covering public figures. I would like to work in St. Louis or North Carolina, but will go wherever, including abroad. OR, if need be, having the experience I have of trying to contact public information people all the time, I could go into PR.

Why Journalism Interests Me: Journalism is essential to maintaining the integrity of a democracy. People have always wondered what was going on in the world around them, and I want to feed that desire. I love to talk to people and hear their stories, and then translate them for readers. Without news, we would live in a black hole. Journalism also helps me to expand my horizons and sharpen my time-management skills, which prove valuable in all walks of life.

Other Interests: Writing, Playing soccer, Spanish
